2019 Internship Program

The beginning of something wonderful

Shyft Solutions has some big news, we’re starting an internship program this summer!

Why does Shyft believe summer internships are so important? As someone who changed majors a couple of times in college, took her time figuring out what she was good at AND what she was interested in, I am intimately familiar with the value of summer internships. Internships gave me the opportunity to be fully immersed in a given career field for a few weeks so I could determine whether it was something I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life. There were some internships that showed me what I was truly NOT meant to do, and some that left me wanting more the next summer. It’s our goal to give each intern an honest look into what today’s software development world looks like so that they can make an informed decision about whether this career field, position, or company is the right fit for them.

How does Shyft plan to do that? Well, one of the first things that most tech companies will require of new employees is that they are familiar with Agile software development, the preferred development methodology used in tech today. Since Eric and I are both certified PMI-ACP, we can do that Agile training in-house during the first few days of the internship. We'll teach the interns how to use that process of software development and then we will work with them to implement it throughout the remainder of the internship. Interns will have access to all of the latest and greatest tools and be able to use modern languages like ReactJS and GoLang on a company provided MacBook (fancy). They’ll take what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to real-world applications in quick fashion (like you’re sometimes only able to do at startups).

Well, that’s great, but are you just doing this out of the kindness of your heart? Yes and no, we are excited to give our interns these opportunities to learn, and we truly believe that by mentoring the interns it will keep us on the top of our game. But we will also be giving them projects that we plan to build as part of our short-term business goals. Our interns will choose from a list of several projects that either expand our service offerings beyond our current capability, or enrich our internal support and monitoring systems to ease troubleshooting and performance tuning. This will not be throw-away work, quite the contrary. This will be a kickstart for us to build on after the summer program ends, and hopefully something that the interns want to come back and continue to develop the following summer as an intern or a full-fledged Shyft employee!
